Abstract: A Dutch company with a technique for biological soil disinfection in the horticulture sector is looking for partners from the cereal processing industry to develop granulates and liquids from protein rich byproducts as an alternative to their current plant based granulates and liquids. The company is also looking for horticulture companies to do trials with these products . Description: Between 2004 and 2009, a Dutch company has developed, in cooperation with the Wageningen University and Research Centre, a new method for soil disinfection. This method uses 100% plant-based granulates with high protein contents, which are put in the soil, followed by covering the soil with a plastic foil during 3-4 weeks. Many experiments, both in the laboratory and in practice, have shown that after this period the soil is free from problematic diseases caused by pathogenic nematodes and fungi. The system has been applied in practice for tomatoes, bell peppers, seed production, lettuce, summer flowers, strawberries, and asparagus. Soil Resetting can be used in greenhouses and outside. This biological method for soil disinfection is protected by patents and since the introduction 70 growers have used it, most of them in the Netherlands. The mentioned granulates are made from fermented coproducts from the food industry. The ingredients are only from plant origin. The granulates make up 75 % of the total costs of the treatment. The company is looking for partners from the food industry to develop granulates with alternative coproducts that are cheaper and horticulure companies that want contribute to trials with these products. Especially the coproducts from the cereal processing industries, which tend to produce large amounts of by-products are interesting, such as bio-ethanol producers and the beer industry. It is important that the by-products are high in protein content. Innovations and advantages of the offer Innovation: It is a biological treatment that is more effective and cheaper that steaming. The working principle is based on creating anaerobic soil conditions. A protein rich plant-based garnulate is then anaerobically digested and the metabolits such as fatty accids, methane and hydrogen sulfide release/free the soil of pathogens . The treatment contribute to a better soil resistance and the ingredients of the granulates add organic materials, potassium and phosphate into the soil that enhaces the crop yields. Advantages: - ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Chemical biocides are problematic for the environment and steaming requires large amounts of energy.Soil Resetting does not have these disadvantages! It improves soil chemical and physical properties, as it increase organic matter content. - VERY EFFECTIVE Chemical biocides often do not give 100% killing of soil pathogens. Steaming of the soil often leads to a quick return of the diseases and release of toxic metallic elements. 100% killing rate has been reported with Soil Resetting, and leaves behind a healthy soil which is expected to remain more resistant against diseases, as reported by WUR. - EASY TO APPLY Applying the product and covering the soil with a plastic foil does not require special equipment and can be performed by most contractors. Planting is possible directly after treatment. - POSSITIVE EFFECT ON THE SOIL When chemicals or steaming are used, the biological balance in the soil is disturbed. Moreover, steaming often impairs the soil structure. Soil Resetting, in contrast, adds useful organic materials and life to the soil. - EXTRA CROP YIELD. Besides preventing crops losses due to diseases, there is often 20 up to 30% extra crop yield. - FUTURE ORIENTED Chemical disinfection is under increasing international pressure and steaming gets more and more expensive. Soil Resetting will therefore become increasingly more attractive. Current and Potential Domain of Application Soil resetting can be used in greenhouses and outside. The system has been applied in practice for tomatoes, bell peppers, seed production, lettuce, summer flowers, strawberries, and asparagus. It is already used by 70 growers mainly in the Netherlands. The company is looking for cooperation with the food industry to develop granulates with alternative plant based coproducts and horticulture organizations to do trials.
